You’ve tossed the idea around, your floor is covered with crumpled pieces of your idea and your procrastination level has already hit the roof. You’re stuck and have already told your friends and peers that your blog is going to go live in a couple of hours. You know you are ready and all you really want to do is start a blog, but you are just not sure about where you should begin.
Well, then you have definitely come to the right place for answers. This guide is a broken down structure build to bring down the anxiety and help you finally get down to writing that blog.
The only problem?
Once you read it, you’ll have no more excuses for not getting started.
HOW TO CREATE A BLOG STEP #1: THE GAME-PLAN
1. FIND YOUR NICHE
Follow your heart and list down the things you are passionate about. If you have more than one thing to add to that list, know that your blog is your personal space and could cover a variety of topics.
2. STAY FOCUSSED
It’s very easy to get distracted, especially when you have no idea as to where to get started.
Also, focus on your niche. Readers who visit your blog should know what to expect, regardless of the unexpected surprises you bring to them as a writer. Although experimenting is good, stick to your comfort zone when you begin your blog.
Keep the content on your blog as original as you can. This is your blog and readers are going to come across to view what you have to offer. copied content can land you into trouble and doesn’t portray what you are best at. If you are afraid of your content not being that great, just remember that good content only comes with experimentation and experience.
4. CONNECT WITH YOURSELF
Try this exercise:
Talk out a post as you write it and once you are done, read it out, just how you would want to communicate your content to a reader. This way instead of worrying about how it will sound, you can always go back and rewrite it.
5. BREAK THE RULES
Regardless of how controversial or serious the theme of your content might be, always infuse a certain amount of levity into your content. Do be informal in places. Think of your content as a conversation you will be having with someone.
6. MAKE YOURSELF YOUR FAVORITE WRITER
As tempting as it might sound to mimic your favorite writer, right now you are your favorite writer. Ask yourself what you would expect from the best and present it on your sheet.
HOW TO CREATE A BLOG STEP #2: THE TECHNOLOGY
1. SELECT YOUR BLOG DOMAIN NAME
Keep it simple. Period.
The easier the name, the easier it is to find. Match Your Blog and Domain Name (make sure it hasn’t been taken). And most importantly make it your own. Avoid copying or finding a similar name to a famous blog, this will mess with your SEO.
2. PICK A CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMS)
If you do not know what a CMS is, Commentum gives a very elaborate definition of “What is a Content Management System”.
Sift through your best options and choose what is best for you. You could use a common platform like WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, or Squarespace. I would suggest WordPress, as it the most widely used CMS with 59% of the marketshare likely due to its ability to customize. Choose your platform based on what you need, in terms of functionality. Do keep in mind that some CMS’s do hosting, domains and content managment- so choose wisely!
Btw, the Jobspire blog is on WordPress.
HOW TO CREATE A BLOG STEP #3: EXECUTE YOUR PLAN
1. PRACTICE CONSISTENCY
Start by creating a schedule, whether it’s every day, three times a week or even every alternate day. Find out what works best for you and stick to it. That way readers will come back to your blog knowing how it is you work and keep coming back for your updates.
2. ENGAGE YOUR READERS
Make your blog easy to access. Getting your readers to sign up or login will just complicate the process. You could get them to sign up and subscribe to your posts.
3. CONNECT WITH YOUR READERS
Respond to Comments and Emails. Feedback is crucial and one of my favorite parts about blogging. It not only show’s your readers about your care and concern towards them, but it helps build a great connection.
Be prepared to know that all your feedback will not be positive and as tempting as it sounds to whip back with some snappy comments, DONT.
4. USE VISUAL AID
Pictures, Video’s and Info graphics are a great way to keep your readers engaged. A good phone camera will work for sure. If you choose to turn it up a notch, you could use a DSLR. In terms of info graphs, make sure that they are sharable.
HOW TO CREATE A BLOG STEP #4: THE KING OF CONNECTIONS
1. CLAIM YOUR HANDLES
Build your community and amplify. Make Social Media your biggest target and go all out. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Quora, Pininterst and so on.
2. NETWORK WITH OTHER BLOGGERS
It is very crucial to connect with other bloggers and keep an eye on how their blog handles are working. LINK, COMMENT, FOLLOW all your favorite bloggers. Try collaborating with them as well.
